3. SHTI ditubuhkan untuk menjalankan perdagangan antarabangsa做生意 serta meluaskan tanah jajahan扩张它管的领域
4. SHTI memerlukan pelabuhan sebagai tempat persinggahan, pusat pengumpulan barang dagangan & pangkalan tentera.
5. Pelabuhan P.P. menyediakan bekalan air, makanan, dan kemudahan membaiki kapal.
6. P.P. dilindungi drpd angin monsun. 不受季候风影响
7. British dan Perancis bersaingan untuk menguasai perdagangan di India.
8. Pangkalan tentera diperlukan untuk mempertahankan petempatannya di India drpd serangan Perancis.

2. Kedaulatan Kedah Tercabar

1. Dasar buka pintu membolehkan Kedah berkembang menjadi entrepot yang penting.
2. Kedah menghadapi ancaman drpd Burma, Siam dan Bugis dr Sel.

3. Ancaman Bugis

1. Perebutan takhta berlaku di kalangan pembesar di Kedah.
2. Sultan Muhammad Jiwa melantik Tunku Abdullah menjadi Raja Muda Kedah.
3. Pelantikan tersebut tidak disetujui oleh kerabat diraja kerana Tunku Abdullah bukan anak gahara. 母亲不是皇族
4. Raja Haji mengetuai Org Bugis untuk menyerang Kedah.
5. Sultan Muhammad Jiwa berundur ke Kangar dan meminta bantuan drpd firma Jourdain Sullivan and de Souza untuk menentang Bugis.
6. Firma bersetuju memberi bantuan dan satu perjanjian ditandatangani untuk membolehkan firma berniaga di Kedah.
7. Sultan membatalkan perjanjiannya apabila firma enggan memberi bantuan.

4. Ancaman Siam

1. Kedah menghantar bunga emas kepada Siam sbg tanda persahabatan.
2. Kedah berhenti menghantar bunga emas semasa Siam berperang dengan Burma.
3. Siam bangkit menjadi kuasa yang kuat selepas peperangan.
4. Siam menuntut supaya Kedah menghantar bunga emas sbg tanda naungan. 自恋狂
5. Sultan Abdullah mendapatkan bantuan drpd SHTI.
6. Baginda menawarkan P.P. kepada SHTI.
7. Francis Light menyedari kepentingan P.P. sbg pelabuhan, namun British juga perlu memelihara kepentingannya dengan Siam.

2. Tipu Helah Francis Light Bagi Mendapatkan P.P.

1. Perjanjian Francis Light dengan Sultan Abdullah

1. Dasar monopoli perdagangan Belanda membimbangkan SHTI.
2. SHTI mendapati bahawa tawaran Sultan Abdullah merupakan peluang yang baik untuk meluaskan kuasanya.
3. Satu perjanjian telah ditandatangani secara peribadi antara Francis Light (FL) dan Sultan Abdullah (SA).
4. Syarat Perjanjian Inggeris-Kedah:

1. SHTI sedia membantu Kedah jika diserang.
2. SHTI tidak akan melindungi musuh.
3. SHTI akan membayar 30000 dolar Sepanyol setahun
4. Kedah membenarkan SHTI menduduki P.P.

5. FL mendirikan petempatan British di P.P. dan menaikkan bendera Union Jack.
6. P.P. dinamakan sebagai  Prince of Wales Island dan petempatan mereka dinamakan Geogetown.
7. Pendudukan oleh FL menandakan bermulanya penjajahan British di TM.

2. SHTI mungkir janji

• Siam menduduki Patani dan mengancam Kedah
• SA meminta SHTI memberikan bantuan ketenteraan.
• SHTI enggan memberikan bantuan kerana menurut mereka, mereka tidak terlibat dalam perjanjian tersebut.
• SHTI juga mahu memelihara kepentingannya dengan Siam.
• FL menawarkan bayaran ganti rugi tetapi tawaran itu ditolak.
• SA membuat persediaan di Seberang Perai untuk mengusir FL dr P.P.
• Baginda mendapat bantuan drpd Riau, Siak, dan Sel.
• FL mendapat bantuan British untuk menyerang kubu baginda.
• SA tewas dan terpaksa menandatangi Perjanjian Persahabatan dan Keamanan Inggeris-Kedah.
• Geoge Leith dilantik sbg Gabenor P.P. dan meduduki P.P. secara rasmi.
• Perjanjian Persahabatan dan Keamanan Inggeris-Kedah

• SHTI menduduki P.P.
• SHTI membayar 6000 dolar Sepanyol setiap tahun sbg pampasan.

1.3  SHTI mengambil Seberang Perai

• Tengku Dziauddin menjadi pemangku Sultan Kedah dengan mengambil gelaran Sultan Dziauddin.
• Sultan Dziauddin menghadapi ancaman Siam.
• SHTI memaksa baginda menandatangi Perjanjian Persahabatan dan Perikatan dengan Gabenor George Leith.
• SHTI menamakan Seberang Perai sbg Province Wellesly.
• Perjanjian Persahabatan dan Perikatan

• Sultan Kedah menyerahkan Seberang Perai kpd SHTI
• SHTI bersetuju membayar 10000 dolar Sepanyol setahun kepada P.P. dan Seberang Perai.
• SHTI akan mengawal kawasan pantai  管沿海地带罢了
• Sultan Kedah tidak akan membenarkan bangsa Eropah lain menetap dalam jajahan takluknya

• SHTI memerlukan Seberang Perai sbg benteng untuk mempertahankan serangan terhadap P.P. dr Kedah.
• SHTI boleh dijadikan kawasan tanaman yang menampung keperluan makanan di P.P. kerana tanahnya subur.
• SHTI sekali lagi enggan memberi bantuan ketenteraan, akhirnya Siam berjaya menawan Kedah.
• Sultan Kedah, Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin terpaksa mendapatkan perlindungan di P.P.
• Raja Siam , Raja Rama III  telah menandatangani Perjanjian Burney dengan Henry Burney di Bangkok.
• Perjanjian Burney:

• British mengiktiraf ketuanan Siam terhadap Kedah.
• Sulatan Ahmad Tajuddin II tidak dibenarkan tinggal di Kedah, P.P, Seberang Perai, Perak, Sel, dan Burma.
• British akan menghantar balik Sultan
• British tidak akan membantu Kedah menyerang Siam dan jajahan takluknya.
• Kedah dikehendaki menghantar bunga emas kepada Siam.
• Siam mengiktiraf pendudukan British di P.P. dan Seberang Perai.

• Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin terus berusaha mendapatkan kembali kedaulatan kerajaan Kedah dari Siam.

1. Pertapakan SHTI di Singapura

1. SHTI Gagal Memajukan P.P.

1. P.P. gagal memainkan peranan sbg pusat pengumpulan barang dagangan kerana kedudukannya terletak jauh di utara Selat Melaka.
2. SHTI memerlukan sebuah pelabuhan di selatan Selat Melaka.
3. SHTI menitikberatkan perdagangan dengan China kerana mendapat pasaran yang menguntungkan di Eropah.
4. SHTI mendapat peluang untuk menguasai Betawi dan Melaka apabila meletusnya Perang Napoleon (Perancis vs Belanda) di Eropah.
5. Peluang ini diperoleh melalui Surat-surat Kew.

• Surat-surat Kew

• Dalam perang Napoleon, Belanda ditawan oleh Perancis.
• Belanda menyerahkan semua jajahannya kepada British semasa berlakunya perang tersebut melalui Surat-surat Kew.
• British akan memulangkan jajahannya apabilanya berakhirnya Perang Napoleon.

6. British terpaksa memulangkan Melaka dan Betawi kepada Belanda selepas berakhirnya Perang Napoleon.
7. Saudagar British diberi layanan yang buruk dan dikenakan cukai yang tinggi di Betawi.
8. Stamford Raffles ditugaskan untuk mencari pelabuhan baru.

2. Singapura Pangkalan Perdagangan yang Strategik

1. Stamford Raffles mencadangkan spy SHTI mendirikan pangkalan di Sing kerana:

1. Kedudukan Sing. yang strategik membolehkan laluan perdagangan di Selat Melaka dan Selat Sunda dikawal.
2. Sing. juga sesuai sbg pelabuhan yang dapat menyaingi pelabuhan Belanda.

2. Raffles menghadapi masalah kerana Sing. terletak ialah sbhg drpd Johor.
3. Sultan Johor, Sultan Abdul Rahman berada di bawah pengaruh Belanda.

3. Taktik Raffles Mengambil Sing.

1. Raffles memaksa Temenggung Abdul Rahman menandatangani satu perjanjian.
2. Perjanjian tersebut tidak sah kerana tidak mendapat persetujuan drpd sultan Johor.
3. Perjanjian di antara Stamford Raffles dgn Temenggung Abdul Rahman

1. SHTI boleh membina loji di Sing.
2. SHTI akan melindungi Temenggung drpd ancaman
3. SHTI akan membayar 3000 dolar Sepanyol setahun kpd Temenggung.
4. SHTI tidak membenarkan Temenggung membuat hubungan dgn negara Barat lain.

4. Raffles menggunakan masalah pewarisan takhta untuk mencapai matlamatnya.
5. Dalam peristiwa tersebut, Tengku Hussein yang merupakan putera sulung Sultan Mahmud III telah diketepikan.
6. Raffles memujuk Tengku Hussein ke Sing. dan ditabalkan sbg sultan Johor.
7. Tengku Hussein telah ditabalkan sbg Sultan Johor dgn mengambil gelaran Sultan Hussein.
8. Sultan Hussein mengiktiraf perjanjian awal antara Temenggung dgn Raffles.
9. Pertabalan Tengku Hussein sbg sultan menyebabkan kerajaan Johor mempunyai dua sultan.

4. SHTI Mencengkam Sing.

• Perjanjian tersebut tidak membolehkan Raffles berkuasa penuh di Sing.
• Perjanjian antara Raffles dengan Sultan Hussein dan Temenggung Abdul Rahman

• Sultan Hussein menerima bayaran 1500 dolar Sepanyol dan Temenggung Abdul Rahman menerima 800 dolar Sepanyo setiap bulan.
• Sultan & Temenggung tidak berhak memungut cukai dr China.
• SHTI berkuasa di seluruh pulau Singapura dan pulau yang berdekatan.
• Undang-undang British dikuatkuasakan.

• John Crawfurd, Residen Sing. telah menandatangi perjanjian dgn sultan dan Temenggung.

• Perjanjian antara Crawfurd dgn sultan dan Temenggung

• Sultan dan Temenggung menyerahkan Sing. kpd SHTI selama-lamanya.
• Sultan dan Temenggung perlu membenarkan pedangang bebas berdagang di Johor dan wilayahnya.
• Sultan dan Temenggung boleh menetap di tanah milik baginda di Singapura.

• Sultan Hussein kecewa dgn syarat perjanjian.
• SHTI mengarahkan Temenggung Abdul Rahman memindahkan pusat pentadbirannya.

1.5 Perpecahan Kepulauan Melayu

• Belanda mendakwa Sing. terletak di bawah pengaruhnya.
• British yakin bhw Sing. berpotensi untuk memenuhi keperluan British.
• Perjanjian Inggeris-Belanda (Persetiaan London) telah ditandatangani.
• Perjanjian Inggeris-Belanda

• Belanda mengiktiraf petempatan British di Sing.
• Belanda tidak akan membuka petempatan baru di TM.
• British menyerahkan Bangkahulu kpd Belanda, sementara Belanda menyerahkan Melaka kpd British.
• British tidak akan membuka petempatan baru di selatan Sing.

• Kesan:

• Kepulauan Melayu terbahagi kpd 2 kawasan pengaruh.
• British meluaskan pengaruhnya tanpa sekatan Belanda.
• British memiliki satu lagi pelabuhan, Melaka.
• British dapat menguasai laluan perdagangan di Selat Melaka.
• Kerajaan Johor berpecah kepada dua, iaitu Johor dan Singapura.

1. Peubuhan dan Pentadbiran NNS

1. P.P. ditadbir oleh Leftenan Gabenor, Sing. dan Melaka ditadbir oleh Residen.
2. P.P, Sing. dan Melaka digabungkan dan dikenal sbg Negeri-negeri Selat (NNS) utk menjimatkan kos dan menyeragamkan pentadbiran.
3. NNS diketuai oleh Gabenor yang menerima arahan drpd Gabenor Jeneral di India.
4. Gabenor NNS dibantu oleh Residen Konsuler.
5. Ibu negeri NNS pertama ialah P.P. lalu digantikan dgn Sing kerana kedudukn Singapura lebih strategik.
6. Undang-undang ditentukan oleh Gabenor Jeneral British.
7. Penduduk NNS merayukan supaya memindah pentadbiran NNS ke London.
8. NNS kemudian diisytiharkan sbg tanah jajahan British dan di letak di bawah pentadbiran Pejabat Tanah Jajahan di London.
9. Majlis Perundangan ditubuhkan untuk membolehkan NNS meluluskan undang sendiri.
10. Faktor-faktor memindahkan pentadbiran:

1. SHTI di India tidak mengambil berat tentang kebajikan NNS.
2. NNS membantah cadangan untuk menghapuskan taraf pelabuhan bebas.
3. Imigran Cina secara tidak terkawal menubuhkan kongsi gelap
4. Pengenalan Akta Mata Wang menjadikan rupee India sbg mata wang rasmi NNS, mengantikan mata wang Sepanyol. Kalangan saudagar tidak puas hati kerana nilai mata wang rupee rendah
